Mumbai Welcomes Its Brand-New Coastal Road: A Game Changer for Commuters

Mumbai, Tuesday : In a significant development that promises to change the face of commuting in Mumbai, the city's much-anticipated coastal road was opened to the public on Tuesday, following its grand inauguration a day prior. Rajesh Karkera, a notable figure from Rediff.com, decided to take his car for a spin on this architectural marvel and was left absolutely awestruck by the experience.

The coastal road, currently opening only its south-bound leg, is poised to drastically cut down travel times. The segment connecting Worli and Marine Drive, previously a 40-minute journey, can now be traversed in a mere nine minutes. The efficiency of this new road doesn't stop at time-saving; Mumbai's civic chief, Iqbal Singh Chahal, highlighted its environmental and economic benefits. The project is expected to save nearly $100 million annually in carbon emissions thanks to fuel savings.

Named in honor of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and inaugurated on the occasion of his death anniversary, the coastal road spans 10.58 km, including 16.5 km of interchanges. This monumental project, with a budget of Rs 14,000 crore, features four lanes on each side and incorporates two tunnels of 2.07 km length each. These tunnels, with a diameter of 12.19 meters, are notable for being the largest built by tunnel boring machines in the country.

A remarkable feat of engineering, this is India's first four-lane coastal road constructed entirely on land reclaimed from the sea, supported by monopiles. The road is designed to seamlessly connect to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, extending further to Dahisar in the western suburbs upon completion. The entire coastal road project, once fully operational, will span over 53 km, offering a faster, more efficient route for Mumbai's commuters.

The opening of the coastal road is not just a testament to Mumbai's progress but also a beacon of sustainable development and architectural ingenuity. As the north-bound carriageway is expected to open by May, Mumbaikars eagerly await the complete experience that this coastal road promises to offer, heralding a new era of commuting in the city.
