Thwaites Glacier

Thwaites Glacier is an unusually broad and vast Antarctic glacier located east of Mount Murphy, on the Walgreen Coast of Marie Byrd Land. It was initially sighted by polar researchers in 1940, mapped in 1959–1966 and officially named in 1967, after the late American glaciologist Fredrik T. Thwaites.[1][3] The glacier flows into Pine Island Bay, part of the Amundsen Sea, at surface speeds which exceed 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) per year near its grounding line. Its fastest-flowing grounded ice is centered between 50 and 100 kilometres (31 and 62 mi) east of Mount Murphy.[1] Like many other parts of the cryosphere, it has been adversely affected by climate change, and provides one of the more notable examples of the retreat of glaciers since 1850. Thwaites Glacier is closely monitored for its potential to elevate sea levels.[4] Since the 1980s, Thwaites and Pine Island Glacier have been described as part of the "weak underbelly" of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, in part because they...

Column: The brilliance of ‘Bleach blond bad built butch body’

Unless you are on some kind of social media cleanse, you heard that Crockett, a Texas Democrat, traded insults last week with fellow Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene during a late-night congressional hearing.Greene, the super-MAGA bodybuilder from Georgia, started it by snarking at Crockett, “I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.” This would seem to break a rule of decorum that legislators aren’t allowed to engage in personal attacks. Crockett, a Black civil rights attorney who represents a largely Black area of South Dallas and who has lovely, long lashes, didn’t hesitate. Crockett addressed the chair of the committee, Kentucky native James Comer, on that point of order after he declined to boot MTG from the meeting. Or as Crockett, a 43-year-old millennial, put it: “I’m just curious, just to better understand your ruling, if someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach blond bad built butch body, that would not be engaging in personali...

Let it wave: Minnesota’s new flag takes flight

Updated: May 12, 3 p.m. | Posted: May 11, 6:57 a.m. As the sun came up over the Minnesota Capitol on Saturday morning, the state’s new flag rose for the first time for Statehood Day. It was handed off to the Minnesota Historical Society after it was retired. Around 5:45 a.m., the new banner was hoisted up the flagpole for the first time. A small crowd gathered on the Capitol roof cheered. Down below, a group of about 20 looked on as the flag above the Statehouse went up in unison with a twin flag near the Department of Veterans Affairs.“This is history happening right before my eyes,” said Anita Gaul, the Vice Chair of the Minnesota Emblems Redesign Commission. “And here ...
